For the last 20 years I have taught art, computer graphics, journalism, digital photography, and language arts. I taught elementary 2 years and the rest has been in grades 6-12.
I am currently teaching art at Aldine ISD and coordinating the Arts Integration program which we have received a $50,000 grant for the last three years to integrate art. Besides teaching my art class my responsibilities include: attending training and planning for the grant. Performing in-service and training opportunities for the teachers of each subject to learn how to integrate art. Training at the Museum of fine art for art integration. Providing guidance and supplies for the teachers to implement arts integration. I am in charge of decorating for all school dances, programs, and events. I attended more than 150 hours of professional development each year. I am a presenter for the Texas Art Education Association and for the Museum of Fine Arts Houston as well as school and district presenter. Personally I create art, write poetry and novels, and I am a photographer. I recently took my photographs of New Orleans and turned them into a book to help raise money to preserve the cemeteries. See- www.SpiritedNewOrleans.com I have a son who is graduating from High school this year. Our family spends free time riding our waverunners and spending time outdoors and traveling. We own a vinyl graphics business (keeps me busy in the summer) where I make stickers and signs. www.TatooYourRide.com I design web sites for myself and friends like this one www.ParkOnTheLake.com
If you asked my students what they like about me they would say: "She really teaches us art" So many art teachers never really teach students how to draw or create art. They just hand them some stuff, show them a picture and say do it. That's the kind of art teachers I had most of the time. I had to learn the hard way. I believe that even if you are in an art class against your will "they made me take it" I can teach you how to draw. Usually at the beginning of a semester you get a few kids who say "I didn't sign up for this class, I want a schedule change. By the end of the week I ask them if they still want to leave and they invariably say no. The students realize that I am actually going to show them how to do stuff and it is not going to be boring so they stay. I'm sneaky and slip in the art history but I make it relevant and interesting. I am high on the technology user spectrum. I use powerpoint, a projector, an elmo, C.P.S. and take my students to the computer lab often. I am a completely weird artist in that I like to have my room neat and organized. My training teacher drove me crazy with her messy room. Organization and promptness are very important to me. I teach because I love to teach and if I can be the reason one kid decides to not quit school that is a very handsome reward. Many students have a difficult time in school and elective classes play a huge part in balancing their life. References: Shally
